Sandy Liang 2024

Sandy Liang debuted her most recent AW 2024 collection at New York Fashion week this past September. Following her recent viral success with her past collections and sold-out Mary Jane-style shoes alongside her widely popular collaborations with Baggu and Salomons, Sandy Liang only continues to grow in success and artistry. With a broad range of inspirations for this ready-to-wear collection varying from The Virgin Suicides, beetles, and the myth of mermaids, it is clear that these garments are meant to exude magic.

Liang’s Moodboard

This collection has a vast range of silhouettes. Her most featured silhouettes include the A-line skirt and dress. The length of each bottom garment is either at a  mini length or a midi length. The waistline falls at the traditional center of the model’s waist, but a handful of looks feature the waistline falling at the hips of the model, resulting in longer blouses and low-rise bottoms. Shown below is an example of an A line mini dress:

For the majority, Liang sticks to a more muted color palette. The main color choices include a light pink, a pearly cream, white, light yellow, beige, and black. Additionally, the collection features a few appreciated pops of color like bright reds, an emerald green, and a few chartreuse bags that complement the harmony of the look. Shown below is a look that features the common pearl and pink that the collection heavily relies on:

This collection features many patterns that assist to create the magical reality of the looks. For example, a pink gingham pattern printed onto the fabric is featured three times in this collection. Additionally, Liang exhibits three graphic tee shirts with printed designs of sea shells with bedazzled embellishments. Bows are also a staple motif in Liang’s design voice, as bows have been sewed onto a handful of the garments on the side of hips, at the center of a dress’s bust, and strategically around a top.  Shown below is an example of the screen-printed graphic tee shirt and the bow detail on the hip of the model:

This collection features an array of textures that aid in the harmony of the garment styling. She chooses to use a mixture of shiny surfaces for her satin pieces as well as stiff fabrics for movement to create a dream-like aesthetic. There are also a few garments with a knit, stretchy texture for drapery around the body. Shown below is a garment featuring both satin and organza to create excellent movement on the runway:

Most notably, Liang uses satin, organza, and cotton to create her designs. The satin stands out with its shiny properties that draws the eyes toward the statement of the look. The organza is seen mostly toward the end of the collection with flowing and layers dresses, veils, and sheer garments. The cotton is the base of the collection as it is seen in most of the looks, allowing the structure and cut to be strong.  Shown below is a look that shows the use of layering organza to create the ideal vision for the collection:

I have been a big fan of the Sandy Liang brand for a while now! I think it is safe to say that this collection is a strong marker of artistic expression and vision. My favorite part of this collection is the patterns and details, aspects that I think really made this collection into what it is. The elegance of the trims and lace are exceptional and the subtle yet powerful embellishments aid in the magical tone. Additionally, I love Liang’s use of organza to create such garments with such beautiful movement and organic shape. I think with these elements you can definitely find the inspiration, vision, mission, and message in this collection.
